What is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal means earth-heat. It is related to the thermal energy of Earth’s interior. On a large scale, the intensity of this thermal energy increases with depth, that is, the temperature of the Earth increases as we travel closer to its center. A global average for Earth’s geothermal gradient (temperature increase with depth) is approximately 30C/km. For example, if we merely removed the outer 3 km of Earth’s outer surface, it would be a sphere 5000C at the core, and nearly hot enough to boil water on its surface. Earth contains an incredibly vast amount of thermal energy.

What is Solar Powered Energy?
Solar Power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaic (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaic convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.

Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. The 354 MW SEGS CSP installation is the largest solar power plant in the world, located in the Mojave Desert of California. Other large CSP plants include the Solnova Solar Power Station (150 MW) and the Andasol solar power station (150 MW), both in Spain. The 214 MW Gujarat Solar Park in India, is the world’s largest photovoltaic plant.
